What is RFID?

RFID, short for Radio Frequency Identification, enables assets to be wirelessly identified and tracked using data transmitted via radio waves, from RFID tags. An RFID system consists of RFID tags, readers, antennas and an application software, working together to capture and manage data in real time.

RFID tags contain a microchip and small antenna and are attached to assets or products that require identification or tracking. These tags can store information such as serial number, product details, batch number and more. RFID readers and antennas are then used to wirelessly capture the information stored on the tags.

The application software stores, processes and analyses the data collected by the RFID readers. This provides businesses with real-time visibility, improved inventory management, asset tracking and actionable data to support smarter decision-making.

Durability

Range of durable tags options. Some tags can withstand harsh environments, e.g. Water, dust, extreme temperatures

Depending on the application, generally less durable. Barcodes can easily be damaged or unreadable due to wear and tear

Data Storage

Stores and transmits larger amounts of data then barcodes. Holds unique identifiers such as product information.

Holds less data then RFID. Stores limited data, such as product identification numbers

Read Range

Read range can be controlled, from 0 to 150+ meters. Tags can be read from a far distance, depending on RFID reader power and frequency

Short read range and close proximity is required to scan the barcode

Security

Can be encrypted, locked for security and memory can be re-written

Can be encrypted. Cannot be locked for security. Memory cannot be re-written

Sensors

Can be combined with sensors to read environmental factors, such as temperature

Cannot be combined with sensors
