UHF RFID History In Australia

Unique Micro Design’s co-founder and RFID specialist, Geoffrey Ramadan, played a key role in supporting GS1 Australia during the industry trials that helped advance RFID in Australia. 

In 2009, Geoff was involved in the selection, organisation and installation of RFID readers used during testing conducted under the Australian Communications and Media Authority's (ACMA) scientific licence, to validate higher RFID power levels. 

The trials demonstrated that UHF RFID systems operating at 4 watts EIRP would not interfere with Vodafone's GSM mobile network. The successful results gave ACMA the confidence to increase Australia's allowable UHF RFID power from 1 watt to 4 watts, aligning Australia to international standards. This increase allowed RFID readers to increase their read distance, read rates and accelerated the adoption of RFID technology across Australian industries.
